Plant Cloning

Plants can be propagated by various asexual means

  • stem cuttings grow adventitious roots
  • root stock forms stem buds in response to injury

Galls: leaf galls or stem galls
  • usually stimulated by wasp laying eggs
. . -wasp also injects chemical into plant
    . . -causes de-differentiation
. . -resulting in growth of gall
  • in Lab, same chemical induces gall growth in any spp.
. . -application of plant hormones induces re-differentiation into stem or root
    . . . auxin or gibberellin
  • resulting normal-looking plant is "clone"
. . -several economic plants have been cloned:
    . . . carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, ...
